Why Training is so Important

With this year coming to an end and a New Year just around the corner, it is my goal as District Training Chair to make sure " Every Scout deserves a trained leader." Are you one of those leader? Our Training Committee is working on some new training opportunities in 2010.

I am sure you all know that a trained adult leaders is one of the keys to a successful unit organization.  Research shows that a trained unit leader will retain 18% more youth than an untrained leader.  For example, one reason youth cite for leaving Scouting is they are bored and is it unexciting. A trained leader knows how to keep youth motivated, excited and interested. Even more important is that parents expect that their Scouts will be led by a qualified, trained leader.

Why is this important?  A successful organization means your young men and women will be better prepared to face the important life events coming their way and that they will be good citizens.  They will be more successful with their spouse, children, job and community.  These are only a few reasons why getting and being trained is so important.

If you are a new leader, get training as soon as possible. Our next Super Saturday is Jan. 30, 2010 at the LDS West Stake.  If you are a leader that is a seasoned veteran, consider doing a refresher course, or get other training that you have not taken or even better, volunteer to help with training.  The BSA training programs never stay the same.  There is always something new to be learned.  Let us all set a goal of having all of our leaders get the training that is crucial to having a successful Scout unit in 2010.
