If you’ve been to a national Scout jamboree, then you know what a big deal it is.

It probably figures into your memories of Scouting in a major way.

You might have done an activity for the first time and been hooked for life. You might have accomplished something you didn’t think you could. You might have seen a speaker who blew you away.

And then there are all the memories around the jamboree — the trip getting there and the journey back home.

Scouts and Scout Masters:
We hope you will want to join us in a service project that combines community service with Tucson water issues and of course our special friends, the bats!
On May 19 we really need you. At 6, our special bat program starts with students from Rio Vista Elementary School performing a special bat dance and then teaching it to the audience. We will also have a bat expert talk to the group about the importance of bats and how they live in our community. Families will bring picnic suppers and then stay to watch the bats fly out at sunset.
Why do we need you? We can’t let the 3000 people attending wake up the bats before they are ready!! We would like groups of you to stand in the wash under the bridge and hold up signs you have made to let people know to stay away. “Quiet, bats sleeping!!” might be an example, but you can make up and decorate your own signs.
For information about other bat nights put on by the Rillito River project as well as videos, see http://www.rillitoriverproject.org/bat-night-2010/
If you are interested in hearing more about this and possibly helping, contact Ann Modica Modica@math.arizona.edu or 520 488-8033.

Eagle Scouts are a different breed. You know it; I know it. And today, we’ve got independent, scientific proof to back up our claim. At last, the results are in from the 2010 Baylor University study, Eagle Scouts: Merit Beyond the Badge, conducted by the university’s Program for Pro-Social Behavior under a grant from the John Templeton Foundation.

The researchers found statistically significant differences between Eagle Scouts, former Scouts who didn’t make Eagle, and men who were never in Scouting. The differences were grouped into seven areas: Health and Recreation, Connection, Service and Leadership, Environmental Stewardship, Goal Orientation, Planning and Preparedness, and Character.

The timing’s perfect with the 100th anniversary of the Eagle Scout Award this year. But what were the findings? How did Eagle Scouts rate? Read on for my complete analysis.

The Jamboree-on-the-Air, or JOTA, is an annual Scouting event that uses amateur radio to link Scouts around the world, around the nation, and in your own community. Held on the third full weekend of October each year, this worldwide jamboree requires no travel, other than to a nearby radio amateur’s ham shack. Many times the hams will come to you by setting up at a Scout camporee, or perhaps they already have a ham shack at your council’s camp. There are many ways to get your Scouts involved in JOTA.
